Test piles are used for detecting cathodic protection parameters and are essential devices in pipeline management and maintenance. They are employed for measuring cathodic protection potential, current, and insulation performance, as well as for coating leak detection and AC/DC interference testing.
Classification of Test Piles:
1. By material: Steel test piles, cement test piles, plastic test piles. Steel test piles are further divided into carbon steel test piles and stainless steel test piles.
2. By function:
● Potential Test Pile: Mainly used for detecting protection potential
● Sacrificial Anode Test Pile: Used to connect sacrificial anodes and measure their performance parameters
● Current Test Pile: Measures current in the pipe
● Protection Effect Test Pile: Connects test coupons
Installation of Test Piles:
a. Test piles, or inspection head devices, are set up to understand the cathodic protection potential of pipelines. Through the inspection head, cathodic protection parameters such as the protection potential of the pipeline can be measured, allowing analysis of the pipeline's cathodic protection status and adjustment of protection facilities.
b. Test piles should be placed 1.5 m from the pipeline center. If anode burial is restricted, test piles can be installed on the pipe trench. Based on the distance from the test pile to the pipeline weld point, anode main cable, and reference electrode, calculate the required lengths of welding cable, anode main cable, and reference cable. Dig the test pile pit and place the test pile, marking the pile type, number, and mileage on the signboard.
c. The test cables and energization point cables on the test pile are connected to the pipeline using thermite welding.
